I had two photo shoots last Sunday, one in Grand County and one in Summit County. So driving back from Grand County I took Ute Pass Road, and happened upon all of these cows right in the middle of the road. I was happy I had my camera and a long lens... and I actually drove back through just to spend some more time with these guys (& gals).
It reminded me that us photographers should always carry a camera in your car because you never know when a photo opportunity will present itself!
Sometimes it's fun to photograph animals with the same rules of people portraiture. I was shooting midday so the shadows are bad, and I know I kept cutting off bodyparts - us photographers learn not to cut people off at the joints. But even with animals, it's all about the eyes, the personality, relationships and showing a little emotion in the portrait.
