Boulder Photographer - Volunteering with Flashes of Hope

This will be my seventh year as a volunteer photographer for Flashes of Hope, a national non-profit whose goal is to photograph every child with cancer until every child is cured! They do portraits in over 75 hospitals across the country and use volunteer professional photographers for monthly shoots at Children's Hospitals. The portraits are gifts to the families suffering with these life threatening illnesses.

A favorite quote from the Flashes of Hope website: "For a few moments, it doesn't seem like a hospital. Children who haven't wanted to get out of bed are suddenly laughing and smiling. And, nurses take a break from administering medicine to join in the fun." They bring in hair and makeup professionals, and it's a fun monthly event for all the kids and adults!

This week I joined another non-profit here in Boulder, There with Care, providing support to the families of children with life threatening illnesses. As a newcomer to Boulder, I was quite honored to walk into my training and see one of my Flashes of Hope images hanging on the wall at the There with Care office. This image was taken in the Bone Marrow Transplant section of the Aurora Children's Hospital, and because the children's immune systems are compromised during this process, it's extra important to protect them from outside germs. So we go in with full gowns, masks and gloves, and even our cameras need to be wiped down before and after.

I have met a few favorite families and kiddos over the years and have followed their journeys and joined their support teams. And the next two photos of an amazing young man who has beaten cancer 5 times now. This photo was taken when Justin was just 4 years old, and he's 9 now and really is a living super hero! If we all had great attitudes like Justin, we could solve ALL the world's problems! Go Justin!

This last image was just selected to go in the Jeff Gordon Children's Foundation annual report! I'm honored and can't wait until I get my copy in the mail. This really is the most meaningful work that I do all year. The families are so appreciative and the organization is so professional and has all the details figured out. Thank you Flashes of Hope!

Happy Photo Accidents!

I had two "happy accidents" yesterday with my camera. After a real estate shoot in Summit County, my camera was still set on a very low shutter speed, and the timer was set for 2 seconds, to allow me to not shake the camera by pushing the shutter. So as I finished my shoot and "threw" the camera over my shoulder, apparently I hit the shutter again as it was hanging off my shoulder. And then later I did the very same thing. Which created these two interesting photos - both I believe to be my vest and skirt from an unusual downward facing position at a very low shutter speed!

It reminds me of a famous photographer Freeman Patterson and his book "Photography and the Art of Seeing." One of the exercises he suggests is to put your camera on a self timer and then swing it around by the strap and just "SEE" what image is created! So today I had to try the exercise and really enjoyed these photographs:

And if there's any question about what walked into this photo above I took another photo without swinging the camera so you can see the gray color in the middle is Aspen the cat, just walking into this happy accident!

Hoping for more "happy accidents" in the near future & thanks to Molly Seeling of Cedar House Photography for giving me a great name for these images!

Snowy Morning in Boulder

January and February tend to be slower months for us photographers - so when I can I try to do some "personal work" - and love getting out on snowy mornings just to wander and explore with my camera. This week we got a few new inches of snow overnight and then the sun came out in the morning and I went on one of my "walkabouts" - explored Chautauqua Park and Flagstaff Mountain in the snow. It was beautiful!

The first photos are closest to our home in Erie - a barn or two in Lafayette and on Cherryvale Road in Boulder.

Chautauqua Park is a beautiful location just outside of Boulder - a landmark in Boulder for more than 100 years with a spectacular view of the flatirons. Weddings and events are held at this beautiful locations, and there are 60 quaint cottages on the property.

The Halfway House is a stone building halfway up Flagstaff Mountain and on City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks property and can be rented for events. There aren't a lot of frills at the Halfway House - just a stone building, picnic tables, and a fireplace and deck... but the views are incredible!

Gracie turned One and We Celebrated with a CAKE SMASH!

I hadn't even heard the term "cake smash" before I started looking into photographing it for a baby's one year old birthday. Gracie has been in for the "Baby's First Year" package and we took her photos at newborn, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and one year. And it just seemed fitting to do a little "Cake Smash!" Although she missed her nap and was overtired, I loved the photos and her four year old sister Adalynn REALLY appreciated the opportunity!

Her slideshow online here...

I've been following some baby photographers that have GREAT ideas for cake smash photos - one of my favorites is a baby and children's photographer in Edinburgh, Scotland who has some beautiful work at www.zoestewart.com and I'm just starting a Pinterest Board to highlight favorite One Year Old Cake Smash photos! www.pinterest.com/beatonphoto
